For many westerners,
the Far East is shrouded in mystery. Their exotic culture and beautiful simplicity inspire us. As our society becomes more global, we are exposed to more ethnic fabric and designs. It was during my regular trip to my local quilt shop that I discovered a piece of fabric with Asian characters on it and I was inspired! Upon discovering that the symbols were called Kanji, I learned that Japan has three written alphabets. Two of them are phonetic (like our own) and the third uses symbols derived from Chinese pictographs. I decided to combine three of the common Kanji for happiness, love, and harmony with watercolor quiltingóone of my passions.
